Can You Get a Vietnam Visa on Arrival for Medical Treatment?

Visa on Arrival in Vietnam is not simply an option that every traveller can request after landing at the airport. Visa issuance at an international border gate is available only in specific circumstances, so international patients should not travel to Vietnam expecting to arrange their visa after arrival without the necessary prior arrangements.

For patients organising treatment in advance, an e-Visa or another appropriate entry option may be more practical, depending on eligibility. An e-Visa is applied for online before travel and issued electronically, while Visa on Arrival involves visa issuance at an international border gate under specific conditions. These are different procedures and should not be treated as interchangeable.

There is also no standard visa category officially called a “Medical Visa” that automatically applies to international patients travelling to Vietnam for treatment. The appropriate option depends on the traveller’s immigration circumstances rather than the type of medical service they intend to receive.

Planning Your Visa and Medical Stay in Vietnam

Before travelling, patients should consider how long the entire medical journey may take rather than looking only at the procedure date. Consultations, diagnostic tests, pre-operative preparation, treatment, recovery and follow-up appointments can all extend the required stay. Procedures such as surgery, IVF, dental rehabilitation or certain eye treatments may require several appointments or a longer recovery period before international travel is advisable.

Patients should also prepare their passport and required entry documents together with relevant medical records, previous test results, imaging, medication information and any documents requested by the healthcare provider. Accommodation, airport transfers, local transportation and access to interpretation may also need to be arranged around the medical schedule.

Where possible, patients should avoid booking a return flight too close to the expected treatment date. The final schedule can change after an in-person consultation, additional testing or clinical assessment, so some flexibility in flights and accommodation may be useful.

What If Treatment or Recovery Takes Longer Than Expected?

A medical plan can sometimes change after the patient arrives in Vietnam. Additional tests may be required, treatment may need to be adjusted or the treating doctor may recommend a longer recovery period before travelling home.

Medical treatment does not automatically allow a patient to remain in Vietnam beyond the period permitted under their entry status. If treatment or recovery is likely to extend beyond the originally planned stay, patients should check their immigration options as early as possible rather than waiting until the permitted stay is close to expiring.

For this reason, international patients planning more complex treatment should consider both the expected medical timeline and the immigration period available to them before confirming travel arrangements.
